PUNT!

There is an old football adage that goes "When you've tried everything you can and nothing is working, punt!"

The actual fact of the matter is that while it is alleged to be a football expression, no coach in the world believes the adage.  Football is one of those games where the primary rule is to never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never,  never, ever quit trying.

Punt is actually an odd word as it has many definitions.  Not only is it a kick customarily made on the Fourth Down and long in football, it is also a flat bottomed boat, moving such a boat forward by standing on board and pushing a long pole against the bottom, the outdated unit of Irish money, an ancient African kingdom, the indentation on the bottom of a wine bottle and the verb "to place a bet on."

More likely the adage was created by a businessperson who had tried everything he could and nothing was working so he tried something wild.  He punted.

Beyond the football idiom, the concept of punting can be broken down into a number of dimensions, among them

  • "to take a flier" -- meaning to try something just to be trying something,

  • "take a WAG" -- WAG is a "Wild Ass Guess" meaning you have no idea if your guess is correct,

  • "take a SWAG" -- SWAG is a "Scientific Wild Ass Guess" meaning you are taking a guess within your field of expertise but it is still a WAG.

  • "take a shot in the dark" -- meaning you know your chances of success are very slim but they are better by trying something than not trying anything at all.

  • "take potluck" -- meaning you get your choice of the options offered.

  • "buy a pig in a poke"-- meaning you are buying something based on trust.  (The term, incidentally, comes from the old days when suckling pigs were brought to market in sacks. The squirming of the pigs in the sacks would indicate their presence.  Unscrupulous farmers would put cats in the bag to simulate the movement of suckling pigs.  Only after the farmer had been paid and was gone would the merchant realize he had been cheated.

  • "take the throw of the dice"  meaning to be bound by the randomness of chance.
